High Strung Photography

Did a shoot last night at a jam session with High Strung, Kathy Blume's latest musical project.  The lighting was challenging, the food was tasty, and the music was eclectic and appropriately twangy.

And that's how to shoot a color run...

I went to the Champlain Valley Expo today to shoot the Color Run 5K.  That's the one where they throw brightly colored cornstarch at the runners.  I didn't want to end up with all kinds of crap on the inside of my gear, so I built this low-budget camera enclosure last night.  It's basically two pieces of 3" PVC, a piece of plexiglass, and a beefy rubber glove.  Some duct tape and some hot glue, and I'm ready to brave the clouds of cornstarch.

Oh yeah.  This looks totally legit.

How'd it work?  As it turns out, pretty well.  It wasn't perfect from a controls standpoint, but it did accomplish it's primary goal of keeping my gear free of cornstarch with flying colors.  I was able to wade into the colorful areas without worry.  On the downside, I couldn't really see through the viewfinder very well, I couldn't really zoom effectively, and the fit was very tight.  Version 2.0 will include two-handed control, a larger bag, and a glass front optic instead of the easily scuffed plexiglass one I have in there now.

Yellow!

Pink!

All in all, a successful experiment!  Now if only I'd remembered to wear a dust mask.  And about those shoes...
